About Vandalia Vandalia is a small city in Fayette County, Illinois, with a population of just over 6,000. Founded in 1819, it served as the state capital until 1839. Vandalia is known for its historic Vandalia State House, built in 1836, which marks its past as the western end of the National Road, the first federal highway from the East Coast.
