About Olney
Olney is a small town in Richland County, Illinois, with a population of about 8,864. Incorporated in 1848, it began as a settlement around 1815 when Thaddeus Morehouse built a log cabin hotel along a stagecoach route. Olney was named after Nathan Olney, a friend of Judge Aaron Shaw, and was chosen as the county seat due to its central location and land donation. The town is known for its unique albino grey squirrel population and its historical contributions to the Civil War and both World Wars. Olney covers roughly 6.66 square miles of mostly land.
