About Vandalia Vandalia is a small city in Fayette County, Illinois, with a population of just over 6,000. Founded in 1819, it became the state capital that same year, replacing Kaskaskia due to flooding concerns. Vandalia served as Illinois’ capital until 1839 when the government moved to Springfield. The city is known for being the western end of the National Road, the first federally funded highway in the United States. Vandalia sits on the Kaskaskia River in east-central Illinois and covers about eight square miles. It is accessible via Interstate 70, U.S. Route 40, and U.S. Route 51.
