Murphysboro is a small city in Jackson County, Illinois, with a population of about 6,800. Founded in 1843, it became the county seat after a courthouse fire in nearby Brownsville. The town is named after William C. Murphy and is known for its historic architecture, museums, and being the site of the deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
