About Mattoon
Mattoon is a city in Coles County, Illinois, with a population of about 16,300. Incorporated in 1857, it developed at the crossing of two railroads in the 1850s and was originally called Pegtown. The name Mattoon honors William B. Mattoon, a railroad engineer. Known as a railroad junction city, Mattoon has historic ties to Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. The town lies near the timberline dividing forested areas and the Grand Prairie region. Visitors can explore landmarks like Allison-Cunningham Park, established in 1858, and the Essex House Hotel, where Lincoln stayed before his 1858 debate. Mattoon is near Charleston and is roughly 115 miles from St. Louis. The area also has a nearby Amish community.
