About Staunton

Staunton is a small city in southeastern Macoupin County, Illinois, with a population of about 4,300. Incorporated in 1859, it was originally named Stanton but a misspelling changed it to Staunton. The town grew in the 1860s with the arrival of the railroad and coal mining, attracting many immigrants. Coal mining was the main industry until the last mine closed in 1951. Staunton is known for its historic coal mining community, the 1918 miners’ union vigilante riot, and a federal art mural in the post office. The city covers about four square miles and lies near the Madison County line. Visitors can reach Staunton via Illinois Route 4, historic U.S. Route 66, or Interstate 55.
