About Cape Girardeau
Cape Girardeau is a city in southeastern Missouri located along the Mississippi River. Incorporated in 1808, it was named after Jean Baptiste de Girardot, who established a trading post there in 1733. The city became a key river port after steamboat trade began in 1835 and was the site of the 1863 Battle of Cape Girardeau during the Civil War. Known as the City of Roses, it is recognized for its historic river port and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge. Cape Girardeau covers about 28.5 square miles and serves as the economic center of southeastern Missouri. Visitors can reach the city via river transportation or nearby regional airports. St. Louis is approximately 100 miles northwest. Nearby attractions include Riverfront Park and Cape Rock Park.
