About Louisville
Louisville is a city in Jefferson County, Kentucky, located on the Indiana state line along the Ohio River. Founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark near the Falls of the Ohio, it became an incorporated city in 1828 and was named after King Louis XVI of France. Louisville played an important role during the Civil War as a major Union stronghold. The city is best known for hosting the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 at Churchill Downs, as well as being the hometown of Muhammad Ali and the Louisville Slugger baseball bats.
