About Granite City
Granite City is located in Madison County, Illinois, within the fertile American Bottom plain along the Upper Mississippi River. Founded in 1896 by the Niedringhaus brothers, it began as a planned company town for graniteware kitchen utensil manufacturing. The city grew quickly with many immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, including Bulgarian and Armenian communities. Historically, Granite City was known for its steel manufacturing and immigrant heritage. It lies near the Chain of Rocks Canal and Horseshoe Lake and is protected by levees.
