About West Frankfort
West Frankfort is a small city in Franklin County, Illinois, with a population of just over 7,000. It began near forts built by the Jordan family around 1810 during Tecumseh’s War. Originally known as Frankfort, the town shifted westward after railroads connecting Chicago, Paducah, and Memphis were built. West Frankfort is known for its coal mining history, including several tragic mine explosions in the 20th century, and the annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas light display. The city covers about five square miles in southern Illinois within the Metro Lakeland area. Visitors can reach West Frankfort by railroads historically important to the region. Nearby attractions include Giant City State Park, located about 25 miles southwest.
