About Louisville
Louisville, Kentucky, located in Jefferson County along the Ohio River at the Indiana state line, was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark near the Falls of the Ohio. The city, named after King Louis XVI of France, became incorporated in 1828. Louisville is known for hosting the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 at Churchill Downs, its connection to Muhammad Ali, and the Louisville Slugger baseball bats. The city developed as a key portage site and later became a major shipping and railroad hub. Visitors can fly into Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, which also serves as UPS’s worldwide air hub. Nearby landmarks include Churchill Downs and the Falls of the Ohio, both significant to the city’s history and growth.
