Olney is a small town in Richland County, Illinois, with a population of about 8,864. It was incorporated in 1848, but settlement began around 1815 when Thaddeus Morehouse built a log cabin hotel along a stagecoach route. Olney was named after Nathan Olney, a friend of Judge Aaron Shaw, and was chosen as the county seat because of its central location and donated land. The town is known for its unique albino grey squirrel population and its residents' significant military service during the Civil War and both World Wars. Olney covers roughly 6.66 square miles of mostly land. While there are no major highways or rail services directly mentioned, it is located within driving distance of cities like Evansville and St. Louis.
