About Poplar Bluff
Poplar Bluff is a city in Butler County, Missouri, known as the Gateway to the Ozarks. It sits along the Black River on a bluff once covered with tulip poplar trees, dividing the Ozark foothills from the Mississippi embayment. The area was first controlled by the French, then Spain, before permanent European settlement began in 1819. Poplar Bluff became the county seat when Butler County was organized in 1849. The city is known for the devastating 1927 tornado, one of the deadliest in U.S. history. Located at the crossroads of U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 67, it serves as a regional hub. Nearby cities include St. Louis, Memphis, and Nashville.
