About Mattoon
Mattoon is a city in Coles County, Illinois, with a population of about 16,300. It was incorporated in 1857 and developed at the crossing of two railroads in the 1850s. Originally called Pegtown, it was renamed Mattoon in 1861 after railroad engineer William B. Mattoon. The town is known as a railroad junction city and has historic ties to Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Mattoon lies near the timberline dividing forested areas and the Grand Prairie region. It is located close to Charleston, Illinois. Notable landmarks include Allison-Cunningham Park, established in 1858, the Essex House Hotel where Lincoln stayed, and a flagpole from Grant’s Civil War camp displayed at the public library.
