About Olney
Olney is a small town in Richland County, Illinois, with a population of about 8,864. It was incorporated in 1848 after settlement began around 1815 when Thaddeus Morehouse built a log cabin hotel along a stagecoach route. Olney was named to honor Nathan Olney and became the county seat due to its central location and land donation. The town is known for its unique albino grey squirrel population and its residents’ significant military service in the Civil War and both World Wars. Olney covers roughly 6.66 square miles of mostly land. While there are no major highways or rail services directly mentioned, the town is within driving distance of cities like Evansville and St. Louis.
