About Murphysboro
Murphysboro is a small city in southern Illinois, located in Jackson County with a population of about 6,800. Founded in 1843, it became the county seat after a fire destroyed the original courthouse in nearby Brownsville. The town was named after William C. Murphy. Murphysboro is known for its historic architecture, museums, and as the site of the deadliest tornado event in U.S. history. It lies near Kinkaid Lake and is about 10 miles east of the Mississippi River. Visitors can reach Murphysboro via JAX Mass Transit bus service from nearby Carbondale.
