About Poplar Bluff
Poplar Bluff is a city in Butler County, Missouri, with a population of about 16,243. It was incorporated in 1849 when the county was organized and chosen as the county seat. The area was first controlled by the French, then Spain, before returning to France in 1802. Permanent European settlement began in 1819. Poplar Bluff is known as the Gateway to the Ozarks and is located at the crossroads of U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 67. The city sits along the Black River on a bluff once covered with tulip poplar trees. Nearby landmarks include the Butler County Courthouse and the historic Cynthia-Kinzer District. It is about 129 miles from St. Louis and 113 miles from Memphis.
