About Louisville
Louisville, Kentucky, is located in Jefferson County along the Ohio River at the Indiana state line. Founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark near the Falls of the Ohio, it grew as a key portage site. The city was named after King Louis XVI of France and incorporated in 1828. Louisville is known for the Kentucky Derby, first held at Churchill Downs in 1875, as well as being the hometown of Muhammad Ali and the Louisville Slugger baseball bats. Visitors can fly into Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, a major UPS air hub. Nearby landmarks include the Falls of the Ohio and Neighborhood House Louisville, the state’s first settlement house established in 1896. The city’s history as a shipping port and railroad hub shaped its growth.
