The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, began as an idea in the 1970s and opened as the Pennyroyal Area Museum in 1976. It was originally housed in the old post office building in downtown Hopkinsville. In 1984, the museums became a joint agency of the City of Hopkinsville and Christian County. In 1991, they were named a beneficiary of a charitable trust. The Woody Winfree Fire-Transportation Museum opened in 2008 but is currently closed due to storm damage sustained in March 2023.

About Hopkinsville
Hopkinsville is a city in southern Christian County, Kentucky, near the Tennessee border and close to Clarksville, Tennessee. Established in 1797 and incorporated in 1804, it was named after Samuel Hopkins, a veteran and state representative. The town played a role in the Civil War with multiple occupations by both Confederate and Union forces. In the early 1900s, Hopkinsville was central to the Black Patch tobacco wars involving the Night Riders. The city is known for the Kelly–Hopkinsville extraterrestrial encounter and the historic Western Kentucky Lunatic Asylum established in 1854. Hopkinsville was historically connected by several railroads supporting trade. Visitors can reach the city via nearby Clarksville or regional airports within about 60 miles. Nearby landmarks include Peace Park and the Hopkinsville Clock Tower.
