About Murphysboro

Murphysboro is a small city in southern Illinois, serving as the county seat of Jackson County. Incorporated in 1843, it was named after William C. Murphy. The town has a rich history, including being the site of the deadliest tornado event in U.S. history and home to Major General John A. Logan, who helped establish Memorial Day. Covering just over five square miles, Murphysboro lies near Kinkaid Lake and about 10 miles east of the Mississippi River.
