About Murphysboro
Murphysboro is a small city in Jackson County, Illinois, with a population of about 6,800. Founded in 1843, it became the county seat after a fire destroyed the original courthouse in nearby Brownsville. The town is named after William C. Murphy, whose name was chosen by drawing. Murphysboro is known for its historic architecture, museums, and being the site of the deadliest tornado in U.S. history. It covers just over five square miles near Kinkaid Lake and lies about 10 miles east of the Mississippi River. Visitors can reach Murphysboro by bus via JAX Mass Transit from nearby Carbondale.
