About Hopkinsville
Hopkinsville is a city in southern Christian County, Kentucky, near the Tennessee border and close to Clarksville, Tennessee. Established in 1797 and incorporated in 1804, it was named after Samuel Hopkins, a veteran and state representative. The town played a significant role during the Civil War with multiple occupations by both Confederate and Union forces. In the early 1900s, Hopkinsville was central to the Black Patch tobacco wars involving the Night Riders. It is also known for the Kelly–Hopkinsville extraterrestrial encounter and the historic Western Kentucky Lunatic Asylum established in 1854. Hopkinsville’s economy was historically based on tobacco farming and supported by several railroads. Visitors can easily reach the city from nearby Clarksville or by rail routes historically serving the area.
