About Poplar Bluff
Poplar Bluff is a city in Butler County, Missouri, with a population of about 16,243. It was established as the county seat in 1849. The area has a rich history, originally controlled by the French, then Spain, before returning to France and later becoming part of the United States. Poplar Bluff is known as the Gateway to the Ozarks and is located at the crossroads of U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 67, making it easy to reach by car. The city sits along the Black River on a bluff once covered with tulip poplar trees. Nearby landmarks include the Butler County Courthouse and the historic Cynthia-Kinzer District. Poplar Bluff is also recognized for the tragic 1927 tornado, one of the deadliest in U.S. history.
