About Highland
Highland is a city in southeastern Madison County, Illinois, with a population of about 10,268. Founded in 1837 by Swiss-German settlers, it was originally named Helvetia. The town changed its name to Highland in the early 20th century to adopt an English name during World War I. Highland is known for its Swiss-German heritage and its connection to Abraham Lincoln, who visited the town. It is also a sister city to Sursee, Switzerland.
