About Pocahontas
Pocahontas is a small village in Bond County, Illinois, with a population of 794. It was incorporated in 1847 and was originally called Hickory Grove and then Amity before taking the name Pocahontas in 1855. The village is known for its coal mining history, centered around the Pocahontas Coal mine, which operated from 1905 to 1942 and produced over 4.7 million tons of coal. Pocahontas covers 0.80 square miles, mostly land with a small amount of water. It is also the birthplace of Grammy-winning country singer Gretchen Wilson. The village is located about 38 miles from St. Louis, making the city the nearest major urban area for visitors traveling to the region.
