About Granite City

Granite City is located in Madison County, Illinois, just eight miles from St. Louis. Founded in 1896 by the Niedringhaus brothers, it began as a planned company town focused on manufacturing graniteware kitchen utensils. The city grew quickly with many immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, including Bulgarian and Armenian communities. Historically, Granite City was known for its steel manufacturing industry and remains home to major employers like U.S. Steel and Kraft Heinz. The city lies in the American Bottom, a fertile plain along the Mississippi River, near the Chain of Rocks Canal and Horseshoe Lake. Visitors can reach Granite City via several interstates including 270, 255, and 70, or by rail through America’s Central Port. Nearby landmarks include Wilson Park and historic churches serving immigrant populations.
