About Worden
Worden is a small village in northern Madison County, Illinois, with a population of just under 1,000 people. It was originally called New Hampton when it was laid out in 1860. The arrival of the railroad in 1870 was a key moment in its history, and the station was named Worden after John C. Worden, an English immigrant and railroad promoter. The village covers less than one square mile and has a rural character. Worden is located about 35 miles northeast of St. Louis, making the city the nearest urban center. The village developed around its railroad station, reflecting its strong ties to railroad history. Nearby waterways drain into Cahokia Creek and eventually the Mississippi River.
