About Kinmundy

Kinmundy is a small town in northeastern Marion County, Illinois, with a population of 831. Established in 1857 alongside the Illinois Central Railroad, it was named after a place in Scotland connected to a railroad agent. The town has a rich railroad history and experienced a major fire in 1903 that destroyed much of downtown. Kinmundy is known for its historic log cabin village, the Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area, and prairie chicken habitat at Prairie Ridge State Natural Area. It covers 1.45 square miles and includes Kinmundy Lake. Visitors can reach Kinmundy via Illinois Route 37 or Interstate 57. The nearest city is Effingham.
