About Granite City
Granite City, Illinois, is located in Madison County within the fertile American Bottom plain along the Upper Mississippi River. Founded in 1896 by the Niedringhaus brothers, it began as a planned company town focused on graniteware kitchen utensil manufacturing. The city grew quickly with many immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, including Bulgarian and Armenian communities. Historically, Granite City was known for its steel manufacturing and immigrant heritage. It lies near the Chain of Rocks Canal and Horseshoe Lake and is part of the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, just eight miles from St. Louis. Visitors can reach Granite City via several interstates including 270, 255, 70, 55, and 64, or by rail through America's Central Port facilities.
