About Murphysboro
Murphysboro is a small city in southern Illinois and the county seat of Jackson County. Incorporated in 1843, it was named after William C. Murphy when the county seat moved here following a courthouse fire in Brownsville. The city has a rich history, including ties to Major General John A. Logan, a Civil War general and U.S. senator who helped establish Memorial Day. Murphysboro is known for its historic architecture, museums, and as the site of the deadliest tornado event in U.S. history. It covers about 5.33 square miles near Kinkaid Lake, roughly 10 miles east of the Mississippi River. Visitors can reach Murphysboro by bus from nearby Carbondale via JAX Mass Transit. Nearby attractions include Giant City State Park and Riverside Park.
