About Herrin
About Herrin Herrin is a city in Williamson County, Illinois, with a population of about 12,271. It began as scattered settlers on Herring’s Prairie, named after Isaac Herring, the first permanent settler and a Baptist preacher. The town grew around coal mining starting in the 1890s and was incorporated as a city in 1900. Herrin is known for its coal mining history and the 1922 Herrin massacre. It covers roughly 9.46 square miles in southern Illinois. Visitors can reach Herrin by the local shortline railroad or via the nearby Herrin-Marion airport. The city is close to Marion, Illinois, and within driving distance of St. Louis and Evansville. HerrinFesta Italiana is a popular local celebration.
