About Highland
Highland is a city in Madison County, Illinois, with a population of about 10,268. Founded in 1837 by Swiss-German settlers, it was originally named Helvetia. The town changed its name to Highland in the early 20th century to adopt an English name and avoid anti-German sentiment during World War I. Highland is known for its Swiss-German heritage and is a sister city to Sursee, Switzerland. Notable historical events include visits by Abraham Lincoln and the Liberty Bell passing through in 1915. Located in southeastern Madison County near St. Louis, Highland covers nearly 8 square miles with some water area including Highland Silver Lake. It is accessible via U.S. Route 40, Illinois Routes 160 and 143, and Interstate 70.
