Harrisburg is a city in Saline County, Illinois, with a population of about 8,600. It was incorporated in 1889 and is located in Southern Illinois near the Saline River valley. The area was originally home to Algonquian tribes such as the Shawnee and Piankashaw. Harrisburg became the county seat in 1859 and grew industrially with woolen mills, brick factories, and coal mining, becoming a major coal distribution hub.
