Edwardsville is a city in Madison County, Illinois, with a population of about 26,500. Founded in 1818 and settled in 1805, it was named after Ninian Edwards, the territorial governor. Edwardsville played a key role in Central Illinois settlement as the starting point of the Edwards Trace trail.
