About Sandoval
Sandoval is a small town in western Marion County, Illinois, with a population of 883. Incorporated in 1859, it began as a trading post at the crossroads of Native American trails. During the Civil War, Sandoval was a camp and enlistment point for soldiers, including the 40th Illinois Infantry. The town is known for its location at the junction of US Highways 50 and 51 and its history as a sundown town in the 1890s. Sandoval covers one square mile and lies within the Kaskaskia River watershed. Visitors can reach Sandoval by traveling on US Highways 50 or 51. The nearest city is Salem, and the town is historically linked to two major railroads, Baltimore and Ohio and Illinois Central.
