About West Frankfort
West Frankfort is a small city in Franklin County, Illinois, with a population of about 7,156. It began near forts built by the Jordan family around 1810 during Tecumseh’s War. Originally called Frankfort, the town grew quickly and was once the county seat. The city of West Frankfort developed after railroad tracks were laid west of Frankfort, shifting business and population. Known for its coal mining history, the area experienced several tragic mine explosions in 1929, 1947, and 1951. West Frankfort lies in southern Illinois within the Metro Lakeland area. It is accessible via historic railroads connecting Chicago, Paducah, and Memphis. Nearby attractions include Giant City State Park about 25 miles southwest. The city is also recognized for its annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas light display.
