Hopkinsville is a city in Christian County, Kentucky, with a population of about 31,000. Established in 1797 and incorporated in 1804, it was named after Samuel Hopkins, a veteran and state representative. The town played a role in the Civil War with multiple occupations and was central to the early 1900s Black Patch tobacco wars involving the Night Riders. Hopkinsville is known for the Kelly–Hopkinsville extraterrestrial encounter and the historic Western Kentucky Lunatic Asylum, founded in 1854.
