About Clarksville
Clarksville is a city in Montgomery County, Tennessee, with a population of about 171,897. Founded in 1785 and named after Revolutionary War hero General George Rogers Clark, it was first surveyed in 1768 and became part of the Transylvania Purchase from the Cherokee in 1775. Clarksville grew through tobacco trade, steamboat navigation, and railroads. It played a strategic role during the Civil War, hosting Confederate camps and Fort Defiance. The city lies near the Cumberland and Red Rivers in northern Tennessee, overlooking the Cumberland River. Clarksville is known for its tobacco history, Fort Campbell military base, historic Civil War sites, and Austin Peay State University. It is accessible by railroad since 1859 and is close to Fort Campbell’s military air facilities. Nearby cities include Nashville, 42 miles away.
