About Granite City
Granite City is located in Madison County, Illinois, within the fertile American Bottom plain along the Upper Mississippi River. Founded in 1896 by the Niedringhaus brothers as a planned company town, it originally grew around graniteware kitchen utensil manufacturing. The city experienced rapid growth in the early 1900s with many immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, including Bulgarian and Armenian communities.
