About West Frankfort
West Frankfort is a small city in southern Illinois, located in Franklin County with a population of about 7,156. The town began near forts built by the Jordan family around 1810 during Tecumseh’s War. Originally called Frankfort, it was once the county seat before the railroad shifted growth westward, creating West Frankfort. The city is known for its coal mining history and tragic mine explosions in 1929, 1947, and 1951. It also gained attention for the 1925 Tri-State Tornado and the annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas light display. West Frankfort lies within the Metro Lakeland area and is accessible by railroads that historically connected Chicago, Paducah, and Memphis. Nearby attractions include Giant City State Park about 25 miles southwest.
