About Murphysboro
Murphysboro is a small city in southern Illinois, located in Jackson County with a population of about 6,800. Established in 1843, it became the county seat after a fire destroyed the original courthouse in nearby Brownsville. The town is named after William C. Murphy and is known for its historic architecture, museums, and being the site of the deadliest tornado event in U.S. history. Murphysboro lies near Kinkaid Lake and is about 10 miles east of the Mississippi River. Visitors can reach the town by bus via JAX Mass Transit from nearby Carbondale.
