About Pocahontas
Pocahontas is a small village in Bond County, Illinois, with a population of 794. It was incorporated in 1847 and was originally called Hickory Grove and then Amity before adopting the name Pocahontas in 1855. The village is known for its coal mining history, centered around the Pocahontas Coal mine, which operated from 1905 to 1942 and produced over 4.7 million tons of coal. This industry was the main economic driver for many years. Pocahontas is also the birthplace of Grammy-winning country singer Gretchen Wilson and is mentioned in the song "Pocahontas Proud." The village covers 0.80 square miles, mostly land with a small portion of water. It is located about 38 miles from St. Louis.
