About Centralia
Centralia, Illinois, is a city founded in 1853 at the junction of two branches of the Illinois Central Railroad, which inspired its name. It lies mainly in southwestern Marion County but also extends into Clinton, Jefferson, and Washington counties. With a population of about 12,000, Centralia covers over nine square miles and is located roughly 60 miles east of St. Louis. The city is known for its railroad origins, historic mining disaster in 1947, and notable landmarks like the large Centralia Carillon.
