About Belleville
Belleville is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, with a population of about 41,700. Founded in 1814 and incorporated as a city in 1850, it was named from the French phrase meaning beautiful city. Belleville became the county seat after George Blair donated land for the town square. It is known for its strong German heritage, being Illinois’s first major German settlement, and its history as a manufacturing center called The Stove Capital of the World. Located about 14 miles from St. Louis, Belleville is near Scott Air Force Base. Visitors can explore several historic districts and the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.
