About Olney
Olney is a small town in Richland County, Illinois, with a population of about 8,864. It was incorporated in 1848 after settlement began around 1815 when Thaddeus Morehouse built a log cabin hotel along a stagecoach route. Olney was named after Nathan Olney, a friend of Judge Aaron Shaw, and was chosen as the county seat due to its central location and donated land. The town is known for its unique albino grey squirrel population and its historical contributions during the Civil War and both World Wars. Visitors can reach Olney by road, and it lies within driving distance of cities like Evansville and St. Louis. Nearby areas offer a glimpse into rural Illinois life and history.
