Vandalia is a small city in Fayette County, Illinois, with a population of just over 6,000. Founded in 1819, it was the state capital of Illinois until 1839. The city is known for its historic Vandalia State House, built in 1836, which served as the state capitol building. Vandalia also marks the western end of the National Road, the first federally funded highway in the United States.
