About Beckemeyer
Beckemeyer is a small village in Clinton County, Illinois, with a population of just over 1,000. It was first settled around 1817 and began as a way station on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad, originally named Buxton. Coal mining started in 1894, bringing growth and a name change to Beckemeyer in 1905. The village is known for its coal mining history, including the tragic 1947 Centralia mine explosion, which is commemorated at Miners Memorial Park. Beckemeyer also had a zinc smelting industry that operated for much of the 20th century. The village covers 0.61 square miles and is located on the historic railroad line. It is about 41 miles from St. Louis and near other cities like Evansville and Paducah.
