About Belleville Belleville is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, located about 14 miles from St. Louis. Founded in 1814 and incorporated as a city in 1850, it was named from the French phrase meaning beautiful city. Belleville became the county seat after George Blair donated land for the town square. The city is known for its strong German heritage, being Illinois’s first major German settlement, and its history as a manufacturing center called The Stove Capital of the World. Belleville covers roughly 23.5 square miles with Richland Creek running through it.
