About Vandalia
Vandalia is a small city in Fayette County, Illinois, with a population of about 6,000. Established in 1819, it served as the state capital until 1839. The city is known for the Vandalia State House, built in 1836, which is preserved as a historic site. Vandalia was also the western end of the National Road, the first federal highway from the East Coast. Located on the Kaskaskia River, Vandalia covers just over eight square miles and lies along Interstate 70, U.S. Route 40, and U.S. Route 51. It is about 60 miles northeast of the Greater St. Louis area. Visitors can explore the town’s rich history and nearby cities in Illinois and Missouri.
