About Poplar Bluff
Poplar Bluff is a city in Butler County, Missouri, with a population of about 16,243. Known as the Gateway to the Ozarks, it sits along the Black River on a bluff once covered with tulip poplar trees. The area was first controlled by the French, then Spain, before becoming part of the United States. Poplar Bluff became the county seat when Butler County was organized in 1849. The city is known for a devastating tornado in 1927 that caused significant damage and loss of life. It lies at the crossroads of U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 67, making it easy to reach by car. Nearby landmarks include the Butler County Courthouse and the historic Cynthia-Kinzer District.
